General Application Questions

  1. How long is the application process?

    It all depends on how quickly you have required documents sent to the Board office for review.


  2. What is required for the application?

  3. I have submitted all required documents and completed my criminal history for my application and it looks like it is complete, what happens next?

    Once your application has been submitted with all required documents and you have completed your criminal history background check, your application must be approved by the Board first before sitting for the Acupuncture Jurisprudence Safety Exam (also known as the ASJ).


  4. Requirements of Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

    TOEFL is only required when your entire education (high school, college or university and acupuncture program) was conducted in a language other than English – then you are required to complete TOEFL.


  5. Do I have to submit my Bachelor’s degree if I have completed my Master’s degree?

    Yes, all undergraduate degrees are required to be submitted for application review.


  6. Should I contact my school to ensure they show a completion of at least 2,500 hours of clock hours for my acupuncture education program?

    Yes, your acupuncture education program must be broken down into clock hours, not just credit hours. Please contact your school to ensure they submit this to avoid any unnecessary hold ups with your application.


  7. How can I verify the Board has received my documents for my application?

    You are encouraged to go to https://www.NJConsumerAffairs.gov/Pages/licensingboards.aspx and create an account, which will allow you to check on the status of your application online.  You can see as items are received and checked off on your pending application.


  8. Do I need to call the Board to make sure they received my application, transcripts or other information?

    The Board office will contact you via mail with a deficiency letter for any missing documents when needed. Please ensure your mailing and email address is up to date with the office at all times. You can check your online checklist as well to see up to date information.

  9. Must I be a citizen of the United States to be eligible for licensure?

    No. New Jersey State law allows for all individuals, regardless of citizenship status, to obtain a professional or occupational license in New Jersey if all requirements for licensure are met. Individuals with undocumented status are eligible for licensure and a social security number is not required for licensure.




Acupuncture Jurisprudence Safety Exam (also known as the ASJ)

  1. What are the dates of the ASJ Exam?

    Exam dates can be found at:  https://www.NJConsumerAffairs.gov/acu/Pages/examdates.aspx.


  2. What is the passing score on the ASJ Exam?

    The passing score on the ASJ Exam is 70%.


  3. How long is the ASJ Exam?

    The ASJ Exam is one (1) hour.


  4. How many questions are on the ASJ exam?

    The ASJ Exam consist of forty (40) multiple choice questions


  5. What is on the ASJ Exam?

    The forty (40) multiple choice questions focus on acupuncture safety issues such as: contraindications to acupuncture treatment, needling safety, “Universal Precautions,” sterilization, and infection control. The remaining questions are related to the laws and regulations governing acupuncture practice in the State of New Jersey

  7. I just submitted my application am I able to sit for the ASJ Exam?

    In order be approved to sit for the ASJ Exam, all applications must be submitted, reviewed and approved by the Board first by the deadline date. No Exceptions.​

  3. Address Change

    You are required to notify the Board if you move within 30 days of the change.
    Please email the Board office at acupuncture@dca.lps.state.nj.us


  4. Name Change

    Name changes can be done by submitting proof of your name change by email (acupuncture@dca.lps.state.nj.us) or mail to

    Please note, if you change your name or address, a new license is not automatically sent to you. You will have to request a duplicate license, a duplicate license fee for the change will apply.


  5. Duplicate License

    A duplicate license fee of $25.00, made out to the State of New Jersey, is required for all duplicate license requests.
