General Questions

1. Must I be a citizen of the United States to be eligible for licensure?

   No. New Jersey State law allows for all individuals, regardless of citizenship status, to obtain a professional or occupational license in New Jersey if all requirements for licensure are met. Individuals with undocumented status are eligible for licensure and a social security number is not required for licensure.
   

2. How many Continuing Education requirements are needed for the biennial renewal?

   Pursuant to N.J.A.C. 13:44H-6.3 - Licensees applying for their first biennial renewal are exempt from this continuing education requirement.
    -  For prosthetist-orthotists, a minimum of 40 credits in topics related to prosthetics and orthotics;
    -  For orthotists, a minimum of 30 credits in topics related to orthotics;
    -  For prosthetists, a minimum of 30 credits in topics related to prosthetics;
    -  For prosthetist-orthotist assistants, a minimum of 16 credits in topics related to prosthetics and orthotics;
    -  For orthotist assistants, a minimum of 12 credits in topics related to orthotics; and
    -  For prosthetist assistants, a minimum of 12 credits in topics related to prosthetics.

3. When should I notify the Board of a change in my address?

   New Jersey licensees must notify the Board in writing within 30 days of any change in the address on file with the Board and must specify whether the address is a residence or employment address. Please be aware that an address change form will be attached to your license. You can also use that form for your address change. All written address changes should be sent to the Orthotics and Prosthetics Board of Examiners at P.O. Box 45034, Newark, New Jersey, 07101. Please be advised that service of an administrative complaint or other process initiated by the Board, the Attorney General or the Division of Consumer Affairs at the licensed practitioner's address on file with the Board shall be deemed adequate notice for the commencement of any inquiry or disciplinary proceeding against the licensed practitioner. Every licensee shall cooperate in any inquiry, inspection or investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Board or the Director pursuant to N.J.A.C. 13:45C.

4. What is inactive status vs expired status?

   Inactive status is when the licensee requests to go from an active to inactive. Expired license is when the licensee does not renew at the end of the biennial period.

   An inactive or expired licensee cannot work in New Jersey. In order to do so you would need to reactivate or reinstate your license with the Board first.

5. How can I request to go on inactive status?

   Please send a written request to the Orthotics and Prosthetics Board of Examiners at P.O. Box 45034, Newark, New Jersey, 07101. Be advised, that by placing your license on inactive status means you may not practice in New Jersey.

6. Why would I need to reinstate?

   You would reinstate your license when you did not renew at the end of the last biennial cycle. Therefore your license goes from active to expired. In order to work in New Jersey, you must be an active licensee.

7. Where can I find a reinstatement form?

   All required fees, documents and instructions are listed on the first page of the Reinstatement Application.

8. While my application for licensure or reinstatement is pending, can I work in New Jersey?

   No.

9. Following initial licensure, when do I renew?

   All licenses expire on February 28th of all odd years regardless of initial date of licensure. Following initial renewal, all licenses are active for two (2) years.

10. How can I request a verification of my New Jersey license to be sent to another state?

    You should send a written request for verification of your license to the Orthotics and Prosthetics Board of Examiners at P.O. Box 45034, Newark, New Jersey, 07101. The fee for licensure verification is $25.00. The written request must include your name, New Jersey license number, the name and address of the state board that you wish your verification to be mailed to, and a $25.00 check or money order made payable to the Orthotics and Prosthetics Board of Examiners. If the state board seeking verification of your license has a specific form to be completed by the New Jersey State Board, the specific form must be included with the written request.

11. How do I request a duplicate license?

    Submit a written request for a duplicate license to the Orthotics and Prosthetics Board of Examiners at P.O. Box 45034, Newark, New Jersey, 07101. The fee for a duplicate license is $25.00. The written request must include your name, address and New Jersey license number. You must also enclose a check or money order in the amount of $25.00 made payable to the Orthotics and Prosthetics Board of Examiners.
