Acting State Attorney General Hoffman, Division of Consumer Affairs and Ocean County Kick off "Safe Summer 2014" Program at Point Pleasant Beach

Newark - Acting Attorney General John J. Hoffman and the Division of Consumer Affairs today joined with Ocean County officials on the boardwalk in Point Pleasant Beach to launch a statewide program that will be active during the next two months, called "Safe Summer 2014."

Consumer Affairs investigators from the state and Ocean County checked boardwalk merchants for compliance with pricing and refund policy disclosures required under law.  Legalized Games of Chance Control Commission (LGCCC) staff inspected arcade games for fairness of play, to ensure players have a legitimate chance to win prizes.  Random inspections of scales were conducted by the State Office of Weights and Measures to ensure accuracy of weighing on the boardwalk. Investigators also tested toys and prizes available along the boardwalk for excessive levels of lead.

"We're working with our local partners to provide a thoroughly enjoyable summer for visitors to our coastal communities," Acting Attorney General Hoffman said. "We're focused on the safe sharing of our streets by motorists, bicyclists, pedestrians and skaters, as well as strict adherence to our consumer protection laws by merchants and arcade operators."

Similar enforcement efforts conducted in prior years showed that the majority of merchants and arcade operators were conducting business in compliance with state laws.

"Beachgoers expect to have a fair chance to win prizes when playing boardwalk games and also expect the toys they buy for their children and the prizes they win to be safe," Acting Consumer Affairs Director Steve Lee said. "Our investigators are working to make sure that this will be not only a fun summer, but a safe one for New Jersey families."

State and county consumer affairs staff provided information to consumers on the Point Pleasant Beach boardwalk as inspections were conducted today.  Representatives from the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety and the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission also participated in this proactive outreach.

Consumer Affairs today also launched a new "Safe Summer 2014" section on its website that contains consumer tips and information about boardwalk games; pedestrian/bicyclist safety; sports safety; toy safety; and water safety.

Consumers with general questions or complaints may contact the Division of Consumer Affairs at 1-800-242-5846 (toll-free within New Jersey) or at 973-504-6200.  The LGCCC can be contacted directly at 973-273-8000.
