The New Jersey Office of Weights and Measures represents one of New Jersey's oldest efforts at consumer protection. Created in 1911, by Governor Woodrow Wilson, the New Jersey Office of Weights and Measures is responsible for ensuring that all commercial and law enforcement weighing and measuring devices are tested and inspected for accuracy, and meet Federal guidelines for specifications and tolerances.
The New Jersey Office of Weights and Measures tests and inspects all commercially used devices from prescription pharmacy balances to large capacity truck scales. In addition, the office is responsible for testing fuel meters, airplane fuel trucks located in area airports, laser guns and radar tuning forks used for speed enforcement and portable vehicle scales used in highway safety programs. This is just a small sample of the devices tested and inspected annually by the New Jersey Office of Weights and Measures. Moreover, the State Office annually conducts tens of thousands of random inspections of packaged commodities to verify that these packages contain what the packer represents as the net quantity.
