The Board of Creative Arts and Activities was established on January 21, 2020, pursuant to N.J.S.A. 45:8B-68 et seq. to oversee New Jersey's licensed professional and associate art therapists, music therapists, dance and movement associate and professional therapists, drama therapists, and recreation therapists. Board members, who are appointed by the Governor with the advice and consent of the senate, must be New Jersey residents. The Board consists of eleven members, ten of the members shall be therapists licensed in art therapy, dance/movement therapy, drama therapy, music therapy, and recreation therapy. The remaining members shall be public members.
Regular meetings of the Board are held on the third Tuesday of every month at 124 Halsey Street, Newark, New Jersey, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Unless otherwise posted, meetings are currently held virtually, and meeting information shall be posted on this site.
The purpose of the Board is:
- to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the people of New Jersey;
- to regulate the practice of creative arts and activities therapy;
- to take action against the unprofessional, improper, unauthorized, or unqualified practice of art therapists, dance/movement therapists, drama therapists, music therapists and recreation therapists and guard against unprofessional conduct by licensed individuals who practice in any of the regulated practices.
The Board protects the public by:
- making sure all art therapists, dance/movement therapists, drama therapists, music therapists, and recreation therapists meet the requirements set by statute;
- investigating and prosecuting licensees who break the State's consumer protection laws; and
- requiring all art therapists, dance/movement therapists, drama therapists, music therapists, and recreation therapists to be licensed and to renew their licenses biennially.
