The Health Clubs Law was enacted in 1988 in order to:
- protect purchasers of health club services from incurring monetary loss in the event a health club closes.
- require health clubs to be registered with the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs.
- require health clubs offering memberships for longer than 3 months, or collecting payments in excess of 3 months, to maintain a bond or letter or credit.
