Protecting New Jersey's senior citizens is a primary objective of the Division of Consumer Affairs. The first step in protecting yourself is learning to recognize fraudulent schemes. There are two areas in which New Jersey Seniors are particularly vulnerable: home repair and telemarketing scams.

Grandparent Scam
The Grandparent Scam begins with an urgent phone call to an unsuspecting senior citizen. The caller may claim to be the victim's grandchild, or claim to be a police officer. Those who fall victim later learn their grandchild was never in trouble. Instead, their money has been wired to a thief and may never be seen again.

Identity Theft and Phishing
The federal government reports that identity theft is now the fastest-growing financial crime. Every 79 seconds, a thief steals someone's identity and opens accounts in the victim's name. To better protect New Jersey residents against identity theft, the Identity Theft Prevention Act took effect on January 1, 2006.
