Proposed Regulation – Board of Dentistry

NEWARK –The Board of Dentistry (Board) has proposed amendments regarding the requirements for registration as a registered dental assistant.

Under existing regulations, applicants for registration as registered dental assistants who do not hold a degree from an approved education program for dental assistants are required to either pass the New Jersey Expanded Functions Examination administered by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) or take an expanded functions course and pass the New Jersey Expanded Functions Examination administered by DANB. The proposed amendments revise this requirement so that applicants who successfully complete a Board-approved expanded functions program will not be required to pass the New Jersey Expanded Functions Examination. In addition, since applicants who complete expanded functions programs will no longer be required to pass the New Jersey Expanded Functions Examination, the proposed amendments require Board approval for all expanded functions programs except those approved by the Commission on Dental Accreditation; delineate program requirements; and set forth the process for obtaining Board approval of an expanded functions program.

The proposed regulation and information on how to submit a comment by November 15, 2024 can be viewed here: https://www.njconsumeraffairs.gov/Proposals/Pages/dentistry-09162024-proposal.aspx
