Proposed Regulation – State Board of Optometrists

NEWARK – The New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs has proposed amendments to the regulations governing prescriptions and the dispensing of medications.

The proposed amendments permit optometrists certified to prescribe oral therapeutic pharmaceutical agents (TPAs) and authorized to prescribe controlled dangerous substances (CDS), the ability to prescribe TPAs with hydrocodone, regardless of the agent's placement on the Drug Enforcement Administration's schedule of CDS. In addition, the proposal repeals language on a prescription blank regarding an optometrist's prescriptive authority since that authority is already identified in other parts of the blank.

The proposed regulation, and information on how to submit a comment by October 28, 2016, can be viewed here.

Follow the Division of Consumer Affairs on its website.
