  2. When should I renew my HHA certificate?

You should renew your certificate and pay the renewal fee as soon as you receive your renewal notice in the mail, no later than November 30 of odd years.

  3. What is the fee to renew my HHA certificate?

    $30.

  4. Is there a late renewal period?

Yes. The late renewal period is December 1, through December 31, of odd years. If you renew during the late period, a $10 late renewal fee will be applied, in addition to the $30 renewal fee, totaling $40.

  5. Can I work during the late renewal period?

Yes, you can work during the late renewal period until December 31 of odd years. If you fail to renew by December 31, your certificate by will be administratively suspended/expired.

  6. What happens if I fail to renew my certification during the renewal period or late renewal period?

Your HHA certificate will be administratively suspended/expired and you will not be permitted to work as an HHA until you apply for the reinstatement of your certification and your reinstatement is approved by the Board.

  7. I just applied for and received my HHA certificate a few months ago, why am I receiving a renewal notice already?

The expiration date for all HHA certificates is November 30 of odd years. If you received your HHA certificate 90 days prior to the expiration date, you are required to renew this year. If you’re not sure when you received your certificate, you may check the expiration date printed on your hard copy certificate.

  8. After I logged in to the renewal website, I received a notice that I do not have a license to renew. What should I do?

Please notify your current employer that you’re not on their employee roster with the Board of Nursing. They must add you to their employee roster as soon as possible. Once your current employer adds you to their employee roster, you will be permitted to renew your HHA certificate.

  9. How soon can I renew after my employer adds me to their employee roster?

Employee roster records are updated in real time, but please allow at least 10 minutes before you begin the renewal process.

  10. What should I do if I’m not currently employed by an HHA employer?

You are not permitted to maintain an HHA certificate without a current employer.  Please contact the Board of Nursing at 973-504-6430 to have your certificate placed into inactive status.

  11. I accidentally selected “inactive” when renewing my certificate. What should I do?

In order to correct your status, please call the Board of Nursing at (973) 504-6430. Please allow 3 business days for your status to be updated.  You may call the Board of Nursing again to verify that the status of your registration has been updated.  Once updated, you must log in to the renewal website to finish your renewal.
