  1. How can I contact the State Board of Applied Behavior Analyst Examiners?

    Questions or public comments can be directed to the State Board of Applied Behavior Analyst Examiners (the “Board”) by emailing BehaviorAnalyst@dca.njoag.gov or leaving a message at (973) 273-8070.

  2. When and where are Board meetings held?

    Board meetings are typically held on the third Tuesday of the month and commence begin at 9:30am.  Specific meeting dates, public agendas, and links to the virtual meetings are available on the Board’s Board’s website under Pages – Board Meetings.

  3. Where can I find the license application?

    Applications are available on the Board's website.

  4. How long do I have to apply for licensure?

    There is no specific grace period or deadline to apply. Non-exempt practitioners of behavior analysis are encouraged to begin the application process as soon as possible.

  5. How long does it take for the application to be approved for licensure?

    The processing time for each application is dependent on the results of a criminal history background check and completion of application requirements.

  6. Am I exempt from the licensure requirement?

    Please review 13:42B-1.1(b) 10-12.

  7. Does this law apply only to BCBAs?

    No, the law applies to everyone who is not exempt and practicing behavior analysis.

  8. What qualifications will I need to become licensed?

    Licensed Applied Behavior Analyst (LBA)
    1. A completed license application [found on the Board’s website under Applications and Forms] provided by the Board;
    2. Proof that the applicant holds a master’s degree or doctoral degree from an institution accredited by a regional accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education, Office of Postsecondary Education;
    3. Proof the applicant holds current certification as a BCBA or BCBA-D; and
    4. Completion of the online jurisprudence orientation.

    Licensed Assistant Applied Behavior Analyst (LaBA)
    1. A completed license application provided by the Board;
    2. Proof that the applicant holds a bachelor’s degree from an institution accredited by a regional accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education, Office of Postsecondary Education;
    3. Proof the applicant holds a current certification as a BCaBA;
    4. The identity of the licensed applied behavior analyst who will supervise the applicant; and
    5. Completion of the online jurisprudence orientation.
  9. Do BCBAs supervising LaBAs need to be licensed?

    Supervision in all its forms, is considered practicing behavior analysis and requires a license.

  10. Do BCBAs supervising candidates for BACB certification need to be licensed?

    Supervision in all its forms is considered practicing behavior analysis and requires a license.

  11. I hold a license in another state. Do I automatically qualify for a license in New Jersey?

    No, please see question #8 for the requirements to become licensed in New Jersey. While licensure cannot be guaranteed, the qualifications in NJ are substantially similar to the requirements of other states.  

  12. Does the coursework at a particular university count toward licensure?

    The Board does not comment on specific coursework. The Board requires certification through the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB), and is not responsible for selecting or approving ABA course sequences. For information about the BACB certification requirements, please visit www.bacb.com

  13. Will there be application and licensure fees associated with the license(s)?

    Yes, fees are determined by the Board through the regulatory process and are used solely to cover the costs of operating the Board.
