Alert On July 10, 2024, Governor Murphy signed into law
P.L. 2024, c.46 (“Act”), which raised the minimum number of hours of class study required for licensure as a massage and bodywork therapist from 500 to 600 hours. The Act also authorized the Board of Massage and Bodywork Therapy (“Board”) to adopt regulations implementing the Act immediately upon filing with the Office of Administrative Law for a period of up to 545 days, and thereafter to adopt permanent regulations.
The Board is aware that there are applicants for licensure who have completed 500 hours of class study consistent with the requirements in place prior to July 10, 2024, and that there are students currently enrolled in programs that require only 500 hours of class study. To avoid the disruption that requiring these applicants and students to complete 100 additional hours of class study would cause, the Board will issue a license to any applicant who completed or enrolled in a program requiring at least 500 hours of class study prior to the effective date of the Board’s forthcoming regulations implementing the Act, provided that (1) the applicant completes at least 500 hours of class study; (2) the course of study meets the Board’s current regulatory requirements (see N.J.A.C. 13:37A-2.1(d)); and (3) the applicant otherwise satisfies the requirements for licensure.
Applicants who enroll in a program after the effective date of the Board’s forthcoming regulations will be required to complete at least 600 hours of class study, consistent with the Act.
